This "drawing" consists
of large colorful ceramic tiles glazed with knots, forming a continuous
path through the Beatrix Farrand Gardens
at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, ME. The path meandered over
rocks, down the steps of the garden and into a wilder area of
natural growth. The piece contrasts "the made" with "the
natural", formal with informal, all the while drawing the viewer
slowly towards
the view of the Atlantic Coast. The knots refer to nautical functions
as they evoke broader metaphors.
The colors of the tiles were suggested by the colors of boats and buoys.
The entire format was inspired by shrines in India which combine cultural
artifacts with elements from nature.
